Vatican Vesak Message Calls for Peace, Compassion, and Interreligious Unity

As Buddhist communities around the world observed Vesak 2026, the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue released its annual message to Buddhists, encouraging both Buddhists and Christians to work together as “artisans of peace.”

According to Vatican News, the message emphasized that peace is not only a political goal, but also a spiritual responsibility that begins within the human heart. The Dicastery called for an “unarmed and disarming peace,” rooted in compassion, dialogue, forgiveness, and daily acts of kindness.

The message also highlighted shared values between Buddhist and Christian traditions, including the rejection of hatred and the importance of loving-kindness. Citing Buddhist teachings such as the Dhammapada and Metta Sutta, the Vatican reflected on the need to overcome anger, suspicion, and hostility through mercy and understanding.

For Buddhist communities celebrating Vesak, including those gathering in Texas from May 2–10, the message offered a timely reminder of Vesak’s deeper meaning: honoring the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing by renewing a commitment to peace, compassion, and harmony among all people.
